HERE'S WHAT'S NEW:

Well, my "little vacation" ended up lasting two and a half years... funny how life steers your life in directions you weren't planning on. I'll start off with occasional posts, but I fully plan to resume this blog to full speed by the new year.

I hope you'll come back for frequent visits, to see new reviews, to share opinions, to take a survey (or two), and to celebrate the shows and show people that have made the TheatreScene!

December Poll Results: Favorite Broadway Christmas Songs

Merry Christmas, fellow theatre fans!

The December Poll was participated in by 14 voters (OK, maybe less, since you could vote for more than one song), a nearly 300% increase over the first poll I did! Thank you all! (A new poll will go up on New Year's Day, so be sure to vote in that one, too!)

NOTE: Some of these selections contain foul language and adult content.

Here are the results:

4. There was a three-way tie for fourth place, with each getting one vote a piece. Here is "12 Days to Christmas" from She Loves Me. This video is from the Macon Little Theatre Summer 2004 production.

From RENT, "Christmas Bells," taken from the Sony Pictures DVD of the final performance.

And, finally, from Billy Elliot, "Merry Christmas, Maggie Thatcher!" This video was taken at a 2008 performance of the show in London. (Listen for the naughty video taper, who sings along toward the end, and notice how there are differences in the staging versus Broadway.)

Now that we have all the pessimism out of the way...

3. In a two-way tie for third place, with 2 votes each, here is "White Christmas" from Irving Berlin's White Christmas. Get out the hot cocoa...

... and "We Need a Little Christmas" from Mame. (I just couldn't bring myself to post the Lucy version, but at least there are some nice vintage photos...)

2. All by itself, in second place, with 3 votes, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," from Meet Me in St. Louis. Yes, this is from the film version, but you can't go wrong with Judy!

1. And your number pick for Best Christmas song on Broadway: "Hard Candy Christmas," from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Here's Broadway baby Dolly Parton and cast from the film. Of course, I'm not sure this is really a Christmas song, but considering the unemployment rate these days...

So there you have it! Your favorite Broadway Christmas songs. Thank you for participating in the poll. And, again, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you.
Jeff
