HERE'S WHAT'S NEW:

Well, my "little vacation" ended up lasting two and a half years... funny how life steers your life in directions you weren't planning on. I'll start off with occasional posts, but I fully plan to resume this blog to full speed by the new year.

I hope you'll come back for frequent visits, to see new reviews, to share opinions, to take a survey (or two), and to celebrate the shows and show people that have made the TheatreScene!

BROADWAY'S BIG STORIES OF THE WEEK!

August 1:
  • Darren Criss will in fact take over for Daniel Radcliffe when he leaves How to Succeed on New Year's Day.  Criss will only play Finch for three weeks, January 3 - 22, 2012.
  • An Evening With Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin will play the Ethel Barrymore Theatre November 21 - January 13.

August 2:
  • Come Fly Away began its National Tour in Atlanta, Georgia today.  The Twyla Tharp dance-ical stars much of the Original Broadway Cast, including John Selya, Cody Green and Laurie Kanyok.
  • David Henry Hwang's Chinglish has found its Broadway home.  Performances of the play will begin October 11 at the Longacre Theatre.

August 3:
  • Baby It's You! will close on September 4 at the Broadhurst Theatre.  When it closes, the show will have played 33 previews and 151 performances.  The biggest surprise is that the show has lasted that long.
  • Get out your basketballs and togas!  Lysistrata Jones is Broadway-bound!  November 12 is the date; the Walter Kerr Theatre is the place.
  • To the surprise of just about everyone, Lauren Ambrose will play Fanny Brice in the Bartlett Sher helmed, Broadway-bound revival of Funny Girl.  Personally, I can't wait.  I love when an actor goes way out of her expected comfort zone.
  • Julian Ovenden officially left the off-Broadway production of Death Takes a Holiday due to illness.  His understudy, Kevin Earley has taken over the role of Death permanently.

August 4:
  • Brooke Shields will continue in the role of Morticia in Broadway's The Addams Family through December 31.
  • Jessie Mueller and David Turner are joining Harry Connick, Jr. in the revival of One a Clear Day You Can See Forever.

August 5:
  • Death Takes a Holiday will be getting a cast recording.  Trust me.  Buy this one - Maury Yeston is in top form with this score.
  • With decent reviews and the number one album on the cast recordings chart, it looks like Ghost: The Musical could be on its way to Broadway.  If so, it will be the third musicalized film of Whoopi Goldberg's to make it to the Main Stem.  First it was The Color Purple, now it is Sister Act and Ghost: The Musical.  Up next: Jumping Jack Flash: A Pop Opera.  Not.  Wait.  I want a producing credit if that happens!
