HERE'S WHAT'S NEW:

Well, my "little vacation" ended up lasting two and a half years... funny how life steers your life in directions you weren't planning on. I'll start off with occasional posts, but I fully plan to resume this blog to full speed by the new year.

I hope you'll come back for frequent visits, to see new reviews, to share opinions, to take a survey (or two), and to celebrate the shows and show people that have made the TheatreScene!

In theatre terms, August 15th has been an important day for this theatre fan.  It marks the closing date (in 1993) of one of my favorite flops, The Goodbye Girl.  It is also the birth date of one of my favorite Broadway actors, Michael Berresse. (Happy Birthday, a day late!)

But August 15, 2002 marked a pretty important date not only for this theatre fan, but in theatre history in the 21st century overall.  It was on that date, ten years ago yesterday, that one of my favorite "modern classics" opened: Hairspray at the Neil Simon Theatre.  And it stayed there for almost six and a half years, closing on January 4, 2009 after 2,642 performances.

Besides the fact that it had a long run - it is the 21st longest-running show in Broadway history - and that it won eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Book, Best Score, Best Direction and Best Musical, Hairspray also introduced us to several people who are, today, Broadway "names."  And it added to the status of several Broadway veterans, as well.

The show won Harvey Fierstein (Edna Turnblad) his third Tony Award, and long-time stage veteran Dick Latessa (Wilbur Turnblad) his first.  Other stage vets in the original cast included Mary Bond Davis (Motormouth Maybelle), Linda Hart (Velma Van Tussle) and Clarke Thorell (Corny Collins).

ABOVE: The Original Broadway Cast

But the cast members who either made their debut with Hairspray, or had it as their first major credit or so, reads like a who's who of Broadway, television and film.  From the principal original cast: Tony-winner Marissa Jaret Winokur (Tracy Turnblad), Matthew Morrison (Link Larkin), Laura Bell Bundy (Amber Van Tussle), Jackie Hoffman (Female Authority Figure) and Kerry Butler (Penny Pingleton).  And from the ensemble: Shoshana Bean, Jenn Gambatese, Danielle Greaves, John Hill, and Josh Bergasse.

Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman

Hairspray also marked the Tony-winning debut of Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman as composer/lyricists.  They have since gone on to write the score for Catch Me If You Can, as well as songs for the Tony Awards and the score for TV's Smash.

Over the course of its run, several "name" and Broadway veteran replacements took over the lead roles - including Barbara Walsh, Julie Halston, Alexis Vega, Jerry Mathers, Bruce Vilanch, Michael McKean, George Wendt, Haley Duff, Diana DeGarmo, Darlene Love, Jm J. Bullock, Peter Scolari, Ashley Parker Angel, Tevin Campbell, and Lance Bass.

Again, though, the show proved to be a first step to much bigger things for then-newbies, who have really come into their own, including: Aaron Tveit, Tommar Wilson, Van Hughes, Richard Blake, Tyler Hanes, Leslie McDonel, Lindsay Nicole Chambers, Andrew Rannells, Carly Jibson, Kathy Brier,  Brynn O'Malley, Ashley Spencer, and Caissie Levy.

Hairspray launched many a career, including lots of people that, today, we are all big fans of.  And for that I am thankful!
