HERE'S WHAT'S NEW:

Well, my "little vacation" ended up lasting two and a half years... funny how life steers your life in directions you weren't planning on. I'll start off with occasional posts, but I fully plan to resume this blog to full speed by the new year.

I hope you'll come back for frequent visits, to see new reviews, to share opinions, to take a survey (or two), and to celebrate the shows and show people that have made the TheatreScene!

HOT or NOT 2014: The Cast of FIRST DATE

Well, here we are!  Another season is underway, and the first new musical begins previews tomorrow!  First Date, the new musical that celebrates one of life's most uncomfortable rites of passage stars Zachary Levi and Krysta Rodriguez, and a small ensemble of some of Broadway's most exciting talents.

And for the second season now, we'll be on the search for the HOTTEST Broadway guys and gals!  As each new musical gets started on Broadway (plus a few major Off-Broadway shows), there'll be a new poll that asks you to rate each cast member as to just how "hot" you think they are!  For each cast member, you'll rate them on a scale of 1 to 10 - 1 being "Ice Cold" all the way up to 10 "Steaming Hot".  At the end of each polling period, the cast member in each category (Leading Actor, Leading Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Male Ensemble, Female Ensemble, Male Understudy/Standby, Female Understudy/Standby) with the highest average will go on to the finals at the end of the season, when we decide who is THE HOTTEST CAST OF THE 2013 - 2014 SEASON!

REMEMBER: "HOT" isn't JUST about looks!  It's all about making an impact.  Cute dosen't hurt, but don't discount a sizzling "hot" performance!

THIS WEEK'S POLL WILL CLOSE AT NOON, ON SUNDAY, JULY 14!
(Finalists will be posted at the "HOT or NOT" tab at the top of this blog)

  1. After the introduction compendium of bad date moments the cast is very hot (in a better show Levi would be a cert for a Tony nomination if not award - he may yet be even in this; he's that good), but the writing only lukewarm and the direction too self consciously showy. If you liked the long run Off-Broadway "date night" revue of a decade or so ago, I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE, this should be right up your alley. It's mainly for the terminally straight who won't be turned off by a few offensive gay stereotypes around the edges, but is tuneful, undemanding fun even if the girl character (the otherwise wonderful Krysta Rodriguez) isn't allowed to be a tolerable human being until late in the second half. Its worst moments (pandering to Jewish stereotypes in "The Girl For You") are still funny and the best moments (the girl's self-revelatory "Safer") can be genuinely touching. 'Summer fun which might do for the fall if competition is light. There's a famous cartoon showing a clueless person coming out of a Shakespeare play complaining "it's nothing but a bunch of famous quotes all strung together!" FIRST DATE may be little more than a bunch of cliches and stereotypes strung together, but if you aren't looking for originality or depth, most of them still work.
