Broadway Ladies: Ms. March 2014: Les Miserables' Keala Settle

Ms. March 2014
Keala Settle

WHY SHE'S MS. BROADWAY: How do you make your return to Broadway after a Tony-nominated turn?  Well, if you are Ms. April, you tackle an iconic role in a great big Broadway revival.  Right now, she's getting laughs, boos and hisses as the funny villain of Les Miserables, Mme. Thenardier.  Of course, like many, she's worked hard to get where she is.  She's done regional turns in shows as diverse as And the World Goes 'Round, A Christmas Carol and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  An she's done the national tour thing, including roles in Hairspray and South Pacific.  But it is her three appearances on the Great White Way that brings us to Keala Settle today.  Let's raise a glass to Ms. Broadway!

SOME FUN FACTS:

  • She was born in November in Hawaii, one of five children.
  • Her parents are British and New Zealander.
  • She moved to Utah, and was raised Mormon.  Hello!

SOME MORE FUN FACTS:

  • Aside from her Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations, she won a Theatre World award for her performance in Hands on a Hardbody.
  • When Hairspray stopped at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, the Post raved about her, but said, "she looks too old for graduate school, let aloe high school." Nice.
  • After that tour she did a lot of backstage work with different designers.
  • She doesn't consider herself a musical theatre actress, but rather an R and B singer!
